Windshield Shape and Design

Foam Conversion can create any microphone windshield in any shape from small tie-clip microphones and earphone covers up to large shotgun mic's shields, from a large range of professional audio foam materials (see custom microphone windshields page for more details). Some microphone foam materials may limit the possible shapes that we can manufacture, but in the main it is possible to create any shape requested.

Manufacturing Windshields to Microphone Dimensions

Foam Conversion have a large database of professional audio microphone specifications. Given that we have the external microphone dimensions (either from the client or from our records), we are able to manufacture a windshield to fit. The majority of microphones have a standard external barrel shape (with a diameter and length). A foam windshield can be made that has internal dimensions that allow a firm friction-fit to most microphones. It is also possible to create many different muffler (or windshield) shapes and designs to fit a particular microphone.

Muffler shapes can be optimised for audio quality and/or for enhanced visibility of the branding on the outside of the windshield. Foam Conversion are able to offer spherical, cylindrical, 3-sided and 4-sided windshields to optimise the exposure of you logo or printed image (for examples, see our gallery of different windshield shapes).

Manufacturing Windshields from Technical Drawings

Foam Conversion can produce a windshield from technical 2D or 3D CAD drawings of a mic cover showing the internal and external dimensions. We accept drawings in most popular CAD and 2D packages such as DXF, DWG, AutoCAD, Adobe Illustrator, EPS, PDF and others (please contact us if you have a question regarding file formats). If there are no technical drawings we can also reverse-engineer a windshield from a previous model (even if it has deteriorated, or partially fallen apart!).

Windshield Graphics and Printing

Adding Logo and Branding Graphics to Windshields
Foam Conversion offer high-quality muffler and windshield printing using a host of different windshield finishes and printing technologies to achieve the image and look required. We specialise in windshield colouring and flocking (a flocked windshield or microphone muffler gives it a brushed velvet permanent professional colour finish). Branding and graphics can be added on plain or flocked foam surfaces, and can range from a simple single or 2-colour graphic up to a full-colour range CMYK/RGB graphic.

Microphone Cover Finishes:

Image shows yellow, pink, orange, green and red coloured microphone foam covers.
  • Raw foam finish (we stock six basic foam colours - black, white, red, blue, green, yellow)
  • Spayed colour finish (in the vast majority of instances we are able to colour match to a Pantone® Reference colour)
  • Dyed colour finish
  • Flocked finish (brushed velvet or nylon look)

Microphone Printing Types

  • Up to 4 colour vinyl (smooth matt finish, reflective, opaque)
  • Up to 4 colour flocked transfer (velour finish - looks like felt)
  • Full colour vinyl print
  • Sprayed logo
  • Masked logo

Mic Logo File Formats

We can accept most common vector graphics and logo file formats for printing on to foam - including: AI, EPS, PDF, and CDR. We can also generate vector graphic files from a bitmap (JPG, BMP) if necessary. If there are no logo or graphic drawings, we may be able to reverse-engineer a logo or graphic (please contact us if you have a question about graphics and we will do our best to offer a solution).

Send us your graphics or logo and your choice of windshield colours and finishes, and we will be happy to quote for any volume of unique branded microphone windshields. Please feel free to call us with any questions regarding bespoke windshields or printing on to foam surfaces.

Microphone Windshield Case Study

At Foam Conversion we manufacture and print microphone windshield covers for a diverse range of customers worldwide. Here are some examples of our custom microphone windshield in use by Paul Weller and Fran Healey at Absolute Radio.

Absolute Radio

Image shows Paul Weller playing live in the Absolute Radio studio using a Foam Conversion microphone windshield cover.Absolute Radio (formerly Virgin Radio) is one of the UK's three Independent National Radio stations.

The station is based in London and plays popular rock music. It currently broadcasts on mediumwave and DAB across the UK, on 105.8 FM in London, Sky Digital (channel 0107), Virgin Media (channel 915), Freeview (channel 727) and Tiscali TV (channel 620). The station also recently launched on the new free to air satellite service Freesat (channel 724). It is also available in other parts of the world via satellite, cable, and on the Internet.

Paul Weller

Image shows Paul Weller playing live in the Absolute Radio studio using a Foam Conversion microphone windshield cover. Starting with the very successful punk-rock band The Jam (1976-1982), Weller then went on to branch out musically to a more soulful style with The Style Council (1983-1989). In 1991 he re-established himself as a successful solo artist, and continues to remain a respected singer, lyricist and guitarist, a fact reaffirmed by his recent awarding of the 2009 BRIT award for 'Best Male Solo Artist'. He has remained a national rather than an international star, which may be unsurprising considering much of his songwriting is rooted in British culture. He is also the principal figure of the 1970s Mod revival and is often referred to as the Modfather.

Fran Healey - Travis

Image shows Fran Healey of Travis recording at the Absolute Radio station. Francis "Fran" Healy (born 23 July 1973) is a Scottish musician. He is currently the lead singer and main songwriter of the Scottish band Travis. Travis have twice been awarded British album of the year at the annual BRIT Awards, and are often credited with having paved the way for bands such as Coldplay, Keane and Snow Patrol. They have released six studio albums, beginning with their debut, Good Feeling, in 1997. Their latest album, Ode to J. Smith, was released in September 2008, to generally positive reviews. An Absolute Radio favourite, Travis came along to play a session for Absolute Radio in December 2008.
